Welcome to my website

Hello - here is my updated personal information (and photo...) as at 1st July 2008 (Please check 'My News' by clicking the box on the left - and clicking on individual bulletins for more detail - your views or constructive comments on any items raised would be welcomed)

I have lived in Meols and Hoylake for most of the past 60 years and I am one of three Conservative Councillors representing West Kirby and Thurstaston Ward - the others being Jeff Green and Geoffrey Watt. We serve the residents and businesses in the area all year round - including those who may not have voted for us. (I was re-elected on 3rd May 2007 - with a substantial majority - to represent the ward for at least a further four years until 2011)

My role as Vice Chairman of the Finance and Best Value Overview and Scrutiny Committee allows me to keep a watchful eye on Cabinet decisions - and subsequent actions of Council officers - relating to all Council income and expenditure on behalf of Council taxpayers to ensure 'value for money' for Wirral residents and businesses alike.

As Chairman of the Wirral MBC Planning Committee, I seek to ensure that appropriate development is properly controlled throughout the borough. This role includes successfully defending appeals against refusal of inappropriate development - and defending the rights of those who feel aggrieved at the impact of planning applications on their lives or that they are being exploited. Another major issue is continuing to ensure the protection of green belt land so that developers do not build on it indiscriminately.

As an member of committees and volunteer action groups promoting the regeneraton of West Kirby, Hoylake and West Wirral as a whole, I am actively involved in identifying and pursuing opportunities to improve and regenerate West Wirral. And to protect the unique quality and attractiveness of Dee estuary including world class sites of 'Special Scientific Interest'. 45 years of development and construction experience has enabled me to bring various agencies together to eliminate persistent problems relating to traffic flow, speeding, parking, safe pedestrian crossings, flooding and varied environmental issues in many parts of West Kirby and Thurstaston Ward.

Acting with ward colleagues - in focused response to resident's specific concerns - we constantly strive to maintain and improve the 'street scene'. This involves making sure that refuse is collected, road and pavement maintenance works are carried out and that weed and foliage overgrowth is controlled.

As a member of the Mersey Dee Alliance, we aspire to bringing unemployed in north east Wirral to jobs in north Wales by seeking to improve the transport infrastructure betwen these two areas. The ultimate aim being that Wirral remains an attractive place to work, live, and enjoy the many recreational and leisure pursuits available to us. This year, Wirral is supporting Liverpool in the 'Capital of Culture 2008'.

Other community involvements include being Board members of Wirral CAB and Wirral CVS, alcohol fuelled violence and low level crime reduction panels, local charities and a board member of Egerton House - the Wirral based initiator of business startups and development. I am also a Governor of Pensby School for Girls.

As a keen conservationist, I am an active member of various local 'friends groups' promoting improvements to the Wirral Way and Thurstaston Visitor Centre along with parks and gardens. The latest project is to assess the viability of carrying out improvements to the attractions of West Kirby.

This includes consultations over parking provision, replacing the sailing school at the end of Dee Lane (the structure of which has come to the end of it's useful life) and objectively identifying the 'pros', 'cons' of funding these improvements from complementary commercial developments that will enhance and regenerate the area.

From recent public consultation, it is clear that residents and businesses are seeking improved parking facilites, replacement arcade canopies and upgraded hard landscaping areas. Consultation currently continues on these issues - although the potential provision of 'residents only' car parking was overwhelmingly rejected in 2007.

Having retired as a Divisional Director of AMEC - formerly responsible for business development and construction activity in the North of England and now running a construction and commercial consultancy service from home - I have the time, the opportunity and a very keen desire to dedicate my experience to serving the residents of Wirral.

You will often see my Red London Taxi Cab somewhere in the ward - and I am usually no more than a short distance away from it. Please feel free to make contact with me for an informal discussion - or at any other time if you need advice or have problems that require sorting out - by means of the contact details given below ...

Are energy saving light bulbs dangerous and not really all they are cracked up to be? Or is this just scaremongering?
Energy-saving light bulbs are (allegedly) so dangerous that everyone must leave the room for at least 15 minutes if one falls to the floor and breaks, a Government department warned earlier this week.
