Young at Heart are a local registered charity which I support. My wife Michaela is a trustee of the charity and we have been members since our daughter was born in 1998 with a serious heart condition.
Its objective is to offer help and support to families of babies and children diagnosed with heart defects. All these children and their families have spent many weeks/months in hospital undergoing major heart surgery.
Some children have had numerous operations throughout their short lives. Sadly, some do not survive and for others their only hope is a heart transplant.
Young at Heart provide a support line and regular ward visits for parents during their time in hospital with their sick child. We work closely with the Heart Unit at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital..

Many of us complain about the lack of out of school activities available to today’s youngsters.I believe that these type of activities are essential in in developing a rounded individual who will contribute to society. I actively support the Sea Cadets by giving up one evening per week and a weekend a month to help instruct and supervise the many activities offerred by the organisation.
The Sea Cadets are a uniformed, disciplined youth movement based upon the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. Our aim is: To help young people towards responsible adulthood by encouraging valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct using a nautical theme based on Naval customs.
Many Sea Cadet Units – known as Training Ships – are based in inner city areas where they continue to promote the origins of the movement, providing worthwhile activities for young people who might otherwise not have the opportunity to develop their life skills.
Although more than 20 percent of new recruits embarking on careers in the Royal Navy are Sea Cadets, the movement is not primarily a pre-service organisation, but sets it sights on equipping young people with the essentials of self reliance, personal discipline and team work which will hold them in good stead whatever career they pursue.
