I have been a member of Sandwell Council since 1978. During the last 25 years I have Chaired various committees of the Council and also been Chair of the West midlands Fire Authority. I was Mayor of Sandwell in the year 1999/ 2000
I currently Chair the Council's Scrutiny Management Board which oversees the work of the 9 Scrutiny Panels.
The Scrutiny side of the Council does three main things:
1. It holds the 10 member Cabinet to account for the decisions they make by being able to "call in" Cabinet decisions before they are acted upon. We can do the same with individual Cabinet members decisions
2. It carries out policy reviews to help ensure that the services the Council provides are cost efective and of high quality
3. It involves members of the public by involving people in the work of the Scrutiny Panels
