St Cuthbert's Church can be found on Stokesley Road, at the gateway to Marton Ward. Originally named for St. Cuthbert, a Bishop of Lindisfarne, it was given to Marton as a gift from the De Brus family. The family were one of the most powerful Norman families in the region; decendents of Robert the Bruce of Scotland; and they bestowed many such gifts on the area, including Guisborough Priory.
The church was refurbished in the 1840s, funded by the local squire, extended and improved into the basis of what we still have today. It remains an important part of the heritage of Middlesbrough; many important figures from our history have found their final resting place in its picturesque graveyard; Henry Bolklow, John Vaughan and their families, the Hinton family, the Bruntons, and the Winterschladens; all integral parts of the formation of the town.
