Middlesbrough Council, Acklam Ward
Councillor Shamal Biswas

My Background

I have been involved in local politics for about 15 years; my father was also an active member of The Labour Party and participated in local politics since the early 1960’s.  As a result of being influenced by the masses of politicians within my family, in 1973, at the mere age of 16, I was a member of The Young Socialists Party.

One of my role models, is my cousin, who is a Mayor in West Bengal, India, and plays a large part in my political success.  My uncle is currently The Education Minister of West Bengal, and has been involved in State Politics for 40 years.  Another one of my cousins, being closely watched by my uncle, has also earned a reputation within student politics and is now upholding responsibilities within the Student Union.

Although my politics and my relatives are very far apart, I try to keep them in mind whilst tackling the day-to-day occurrences of the politics within my local region.
