Middlesbrough Council, Middlehaven Ward
Councillor John McPartland

my role as a councillor

I have already stated, on my HOME PAGE, my personal philosophy regarding contact with residents of Middlehaven Ward. It is the essence of being a good ward councillor. I should also like to remind  residents of Middlehaven that we have the advantage of having the Town Hall in our ward. This enables me to get to any area in the ward from my office on a double quick basis. Please ring me if I am needed, either for a chat or for a visit.

In addition to work in the ward I have been placed by the full Council onto various committees. These take up a lot of my time but they are essential to enhancing the quality of life in the town. When my work on these committees is multiplied by the knock on effect of similar work, on other committees, done by my colleagues, it can clearly be seen how they contribute to the overall "health" of  Middlesbrough.

My committees are:

  • Planning and Development Committee ( I am the Chairman)
  • Chemoxy Community Liaison (Halterman)
  • Erimus Housing Board
  • Five Rivers Partnership Board
  • International Centre
  • Northern Sports
  • Middlesbrough Racial Harassment Multi Agency Forum
  • St Mary`s Centre (Council of Management)
  • Abingdon School Governor
  • Children & Learning Scrutiny Panel
  • Environment Scrutiny Panel

In addition I have the responsibility of being the Chief Whip for the Labour Group. The Labour Group is the largest on the Council.

Labour                         29  Council seats

Conservative                  7  Council seats

Lib/Dems                       6  Council seats

Independent                   3  Council seats

MIG                              2 Council seats

As well as the above committees I attend and speak at full Council meetings, and also avail myself of the opportunity of attending the Mayor`s Executive  meetings. I speak at these meetings if I believe that I have something to contribute. Rest assured that, if areas of concern to Middlehaven residents are on the agenda, I will speak on your behalf. For those of you who read the local press, or tune in to Radio Cleveland, I can be read or heard on a regular basis.
