Results for Middlesbrough’s young people in their GCSE results have continued to improve according to figures released today (10/01/08). The final figures for exams taken in 2007 show that almost 54 per cent of young people taking the exams in Middlesbrough achieved five or more A* to C grades, continuing the upward trend shown in the previous year’s figures.

Five weeks of consultation over plans to create a new Catholic secondary school in Middlesbrough will begin on January 14.
The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme is investing millions of pounds in creating the new school to safeguard Catholic education in Middlesbrough into the future.

MIDDLESBROUGH COUNCIL has a new Historic Environment Champion. Councillor Julia Rostron, who represents the Linthorpe ward, has taken on the role.

ACKLAM Library’s popular coffee mornings regularly feature guest speakers and this month Encyclopedia Britannica and Middlesbrough’s Transporter Bridge will be two subjects up for discussion.

The unseasonal display at the Consumer Advice centre in Corporation Road is to help launch the Sav£ Xmas campaign by Middlesbrough Council’s trading standards department.

ANYONE over fifty years old who would like to get to grips with the game of tennis is welcome to join Middlesbrough Council’s tennis coaching courses at Tennis World on Ladgate Lane.

SOME of the country’s top children’s authors are visiting Middlesbrough as part of the Northern Children’s Book Festival (NCBF). More than forty of the UK's most popular children's writers, poets, illustrators and storytellers will be in the region from 5th to 17th November in what is the biggest annual book festival in the UK.

Middlesbrough Council’s new pedestrian and cycle training scheme for schools - Steps’n’Skills - will be launched on 7 November with a distinctive new logo. Road safety pedestrian training was previously known as Kerbcraft and cycle training was offered to selected areas in Middlesbrough.

Four girls from Thorntree who created a back drop depicting criminal damage and its effects on the community saw it featured at an X-factor style MCing competition at Middlesbrough Football Club recently.

12/11/2007 -  CENTRE CHANGING FOR THE BETTER 
YOUNG people and staff at a centre for pupils excluded from school have been praised by government inspectors.
The inspectors judged that all aspects of school activities were at least satisfactory and that the curriculum and the centre’s leadership and management were good. As a result the centre is no longer in need of special measures. These were imposed after a 2006 inspection.

12/11/2007 -  IT’S ONE MILLION POUND MIMA 
mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) has won a £1 million boost for its collection. The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity today announced that mima in partnership with The Drawing Centre, New York, has been awarded £1 million. The money will fund the creation of a collection of international contemporary art through the charity’s new scheme, Art Fund International.

MIDDLESBROUGH 1st, the self-help group for people with learning difficulties and their carers are opening a new shop

PARENTS and residents have the chance to find our more about big plans for two local schools next week.
They can come along to a public exhibition of the plans for Ormesby and Priory Woods Schools on Wednesday (October 31) at Ormesby School from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Both schools are part of the town-wide Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project, the biggest ever investment in Middlesbrough’s secondary schools

YOUNG people from all over Middlesbrough will be asking for answers tomorrow. They’ll be taking part in the town’s Youth Debate organised by the council and children’s charity Barnardo’s, as part of their national "Doing Politix" initiative, supported by the Electoral Commission.

THEY’RE hoping to hit the headlines at a popular Middlesbrough beauty spot. The new interpretative panels informing visitors of the attractions of Fairy Dell in Marton have been created in a newspaper-style format. The dell’s trees delights form part of a property page, while its wild residents include web designers (spiders), refuse workers (beetles) and tree-planters (squirrels). Meanwhile the woodland birds describe themselves in a lonely hearts column.

A pioneering self-help group is giving accolades to its unsung heroes this week. Middlesbrough 1st, the organisation that supports adults who have learning disabilities and their carers is holding an awards evening this Wednesday (October 24).

RESIDENTS across Middlesbrough are getting the latest information on what’s being done to make their neighbourhood safer. In a joint initiative by Middlesbrough Council and Cleveland Police, every household and business in town is getting a Neighbourhood Safety bulletin giving them up to date information on community safety in their area.

MIDDLESBROUGH has scooped the pool in an awards ceremony celebrating a more sustainable way of living. The town won three of the four awards in the Dott 07 (Designs of the time 2007) Creative Community Awards.

MIDDLESBROUGH’S Mayor Ray Mallon has demanded answers from Channel 4 over its labelling of Middlesbrough as the UK’s "worst town." The Mayor will be writing to the chairman of Channel 4 asking for full details of how "Location, Location, location" arrived at its conclusions and what academic rigour was applied to the analysis of their findings.

Middlesbrough Council today (Monday 15 October 2007) responded to the Channel 4 programme 'Best and Worst Live!' which named Middlesbrough as the worst place to live in the UK.

They’re backing Middlesbrough Council’s Every Schoolday Matters campaign, which aims to improve attendance at schools across the town. The campaign will see incentives to youngsters who achieve improved attendance, and advice to parents, explaining how important it is to get their child to school every day

This major town-wide survey is held every two years and gives residents the chance to let Middlesbrough Council and the Middlesbrough Partnership know what they think about services and the quality of life in the town.

A meeting of this panel was held at Middlesbrough Town Hall today to consider whether Councillor Joan McTigue had breached the Member’s Code of Conduct.
