I was first elected,in May 2005, as the SDLP Representative for Magherafelt Town which includes the following electoral wards -
Towns Park West, Towns Park East, Glebe, Knockloughrim, Lecumpher and Ballymaguigan.
My colleague Kate Lagan, who represents Sperrin, is the other SDLP councillor on Magherafelt District Council.
At the recent AGM I was selected to serve on the following committees for 2008/9 -
Magherafellt Town Partnership
Art of Regeneration
Peace III Partnership
Roads Safety Committee
Home Accident Prevention
NILGA - Northern Ireland Local Govt. Assoc.
Mid Ulster Council Review of Public Administration Committee
District Policing Partnership - I also served as an independent member of the DPP prior to becoming a councillor.
Planning schedules are normally dealt with at each monthly meeting of the council. Subsequent deferrals are then scheduled, if appropriate ,for individual office meetings with Planning representatives, applicants and agents. Current Planning schedules can be accessed via the link in "My Latest News" below
Elections to local Councils are normally held every four years but under the Review of Public Administration (RPA) Magherafelt is due to merge with Cookstown and Dungannon councils in 2011.There will not be a local council election, therefore,in 2009 and Councillors currently elected will remain in office for the additional 2 years.
I will be using this site to keep you informed about my work, and to provide you with information about issues impacting on the Magherafelt District Council area.
This web site has been provided to help me in my work as a councillor – to help me communicate with all residents in the Magherafelt District Council area regardless of their political persuasion. It has been provided to help improve the quality of communication between councillors and the people that they represent. As this website has been established with funding from the e-Government Fund programme, it is not appropriate for me to use it for the purposes of political campaigning.
However, there is a ‘My Politics’ link in the toolbar on the left-hand side of this website, and I may use that to link to political sites that I think are of interest.
I hope that you will feel free to use the ‘Contact Me’ button in the toolbar on the left of this site to let me know your views on any important upcoming business that the council is involved in. I’d also be interested to hear how you’d like me to use this website – and other INTERNET tools to improve the way that important local issues are communicated to you.
With best wishes
Councillor Jim Campbell
