All About Me

I was born in 1946 in OldhamMy father was an accountant and my mother owned a shop. I was one of three children, having both a brother and sister. I first attended Layton Junior School in Blackpool before moving on to Bailey Boys School in Fleetwood.

Aged 18 I became a retained fireman in what was then the Lancashire Fire Brigade. I enjoyed the challenges of the job so much that a year later I became a full time member of the Brigade originally based in Heywood I moved to stations in Ramsbottom, Accrington and Rossendale.  I retired from the Fire Service in 1993. It is interesting that the Brigade is now called the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, perhaps reflecting how the job has grown and developed over the years.

During my time as a fireman I became involved with the Fire Brigade’s Union, eventually becoming the North West Regional Secretary. My experiences with the Union gave me an insight into many issues and started an interest in local politics which culminated in my being elected as a member of Rossendale Borough Council in 1985. During my time as a Borough Council I served on a number of different committees and was even Mayor between 1994 and 1995.

I was elected as a County Councillor in 1993 representing the electoral division of Rossendale West. Once again I have served on a number of committees. I was particularly pleased to be able to maintain a connection with my previous profession when I became the Chairman of the Lancashire Combined Fire Authority.

In May 2005 I was appointed as the Chairman of the County Council, replacing County Councillor Nora Ward to whom I had previously acted as Vice Chairman. I am proud to have been Chairman and an ambassador for the County, representing the people of Lancashire at events and functions.

I currently live in Rising Bridge and have three children and five beautiful (but tiring!) grandchildren. In the past I was a keen footballer and played for several amateur teams across the North West. These days though I prefer my recreation to be a little slower and like nothing better than a round at my local Golf Club.
