A CLASSICAL music concert for babies hit the high notes this weekend in Rossendale and was an overwhelming success and a wonderful experience, according to three local county councillors.

Flat batteries bring top prizes for Rossendale schoolchildren
GREEN-minded schoolchildren from Rossendale have scooped high-tech prizes for their recycling efforts.

Thirteen primary schools in the borough have been enthusiastically collecting spent household batteries as part of a Lancashire County Council sponsored competition.

The top three performing schools, Britannia Community Primary, Edenfield Church of England Primary and Bacup St Saviour's Community Primary winning a laptop, camcorder and digital camera respectively received their prizes at the Rossendale Lancashire Local on Tuesday.

Headteacher of Britannia Community Primary, Peter Morley, said: “We are very pleased to have been the winning school. The scheme has been a great way to teach the children about recycling and we’ll certainly be continuing to collect the batteries.”

County Councillor Bob Wilkinson presented the prizes. He said: “It’s great to see so many local young people doing the
