I am proud to have been the Chairman of Governors of Mayfield Special School in Chorley for over 25 years, since my daughter Judith now 42 was a pupil there. Chorley Mencap, parents and indeed the whole community fought to get a custom built school into the building programme in the mid 70's to replace the unsuitable old house in which they were then being educated. With my husband Leo and an enthusiastic Committee we then embarked on raising over £145,000 to add on a swimming pool which is a huge asset for our children and has provided first swimming lessons for thousands of Chorley children. The school has a tremendous reputation for improving the quality of life of youngsters with a learning disability in this town and is staffed by very dedicated and highly skilled teachers, assistants, therapists and a great support network. It has won awards galore .
