Hello, my name is Roger Allen, I have been a Hardway councillor since first elected in 2000. I was born in Gosport so can claim to be truly a Gosport man. I went to school at Bridgemary Secondary until December 1958 and then at the tender age of just fifteen I joined the Army Apprentices College at Arborfield on the 13th January 1959.
I served in the Royal Electric and Mechanical Engineers (R.E.M.E) and spent time in Northern Ireland, Trucial Oman, Aden and Germany with a few short visits to other parts of the world. I qualified as an Armoured Vehicle Technician class 1 and hoped to continue through my artificer training and have a full career in the army, but that was not to be. I was injured in my role as an arctic warfare specialist; there was me, a pair of skis, a large sledge full of equipment and a very poorly placed tree. The result, damage to my spine that saw me in hospital (Haslar) for twelve months and then eventually medically discharged.
After eleven and a half years I found myself in civilian life. I did a number of jobs including driving a bus before starting my own business in the vehicle repair industry. I also ran an insulation company and perhaps I insulated your home.
I am married and with my wife Jill we brought up two children both of whom were educated in Gosport, my daughter going on to Southampton University to study nursing. I hope that you will not need the tender care of Queen Alexander Critical Care Unit, but, that is where you will find my daughter who is in charge. My son you may see in a large white van with Paul Allen Carpets and Flooring emblazoned on the sides. He may be fitting your carpets or laying your new kitchen flooring and more. Both of my children have presented me with grandchildren, I now have five.
I changed careers quite dramatically in 1985, when I studied to become a hypnotherapist. After qualifying I ran my own practice here in Gosport. I have written four books on Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy, all of which have been published and am delighted that a number of colleges throughout the world use my books as a study aid.
I now devote my efforts to moving Gosport forward in my role as a councillor; I presently serve on a number of committees and represent the town on health matters. I sit on the Gosport & Fareham Clinical Commissioning Board. I head up the Gosport Licensing Board as Chairman, my second stint in this post.
In 2010 I was elected Mayor of Gosport and for me that was a huge honour and I have memories that will remain with me for the rest of my life.
I hold myself ready to help my constituents in whatever way that I can and it does give me a lot of satisfaction when I can help provide a solution to problems. True, I may not know all of the answers, but it is a good bet that I will know someone who does and can guide people through the difficulties that they face. If you have something that you wish to discuss then please do contact me. I will not ask you who you voted for.
Each month I put out an emailed newsletter to those people in the ward for whom I have email addresses for. These newsletters keep you up to date with what is happening in the ward and in Gosport generally and have proved to be very popular.
If you would like to receive the newsletters, just send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and type newsletter in the subject line. You will b added to the distribution list. All copies are sent 'blind copy' to ensure that your email address dos not get into the wrong hands.
