Difficult times ahead

The Country faces unprecedented financial problems and it’s clear that all public services will be required to operate with vastly reduced funding.Gosport Council is no exception and I feel it is right and proper for me to outline what action we have taken to date and what we are proposing for the future. The Council has already taken action by reviewing staffing, deleting one Director and two Senior Manager posts. In the last few years overall staffing has been reduced by 28 full time posts, a process that will continue with more posts deleted over the next few months.

Please be assured that the Council is committed to protecting front line services and we will continue to do all we can to achieve this. However, we need to prepare for the 32% budget cuts announced in the Comprehensive Spending Review which will be implemented over the next four years, and so would like your views on which services you believe we should give the highest priority. To ensure all households in Gosport have been consulted we have printed a list in Coastline magazine (which is delivered from 22nd November to 28th November) listing services the Council currently provides which are over and above services, such as refuse collection, that we are legally required to provide, and also the cost of providing those services.

Please take the time to let me know your views. I would reiterate the Council’s commitment in trying to preserve all services where we can possibly do so.

Thank you for your understanding through these difficult times.
