Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Coogan is a forty year old father of three children, who has lived in Ballynahinch since meeting his wife Sharon in 1992.
He has been a member of the Betsy Gray Sinn Féin Cumann since its formation in 1998, and was elected to Down District Council in May 2005. Mickey has held a number of positions at both Cumann and Comhairle Ceantair level and has been involved in a number of initiatives including Suicide Awareness, and the formation of the Loughinisland Justice Group.
Since his election to Council he has held a number of positions. He was Chairperson of the Policy & Resources Committee, and a member of the Community Safety Partnership, District Policing Partnership and the East Region Waste Management Group (Arc21) in 2007.
Mickey is also one of two Council Representatives on the South Eastern Education and Library Board, and through that is also on the Board of Governors of St. Patricks P.S and St.Colmans H.S.
At the Council AGM on the 16th June 2008 he became the Chairperson of the Culture & Economic Development Committee, and was appointed to the Externaal Affairs and the Policy & Resources Committee. He has also been appointed to the Local Area Group of the Rural Development Programme.
