27-year-old Sharon Haughey lives in Granemore, in rural Armagh.
President Bill Clinton has described her as ‘a remarkable young woman’.
Sharon has a First Class Hons in Communications, Advertising and Marketing and a Diploma in Professional Practice. She was awarded Dissertation of the year, 2003 from the University of Ulster and has a Diploma in Strategic Perspectives on Governance and Growth from JFK School of Government, Harvard, Boston.
She works with the SDLP as a Press Officer at Stormont and worked in the United States Senate for Hillary Clinton. She was selected as a Young Leader in 2003 by the Washington Ireland Program and was appointed as the youngest a member of the Civic Forum for Northern Ireland in 2000.
Sharon has been a member of the SDLP for 10 years and has served on the Party’s General Council and is chair and founder of the SDLP Newry and Armagh Youth Group
Sharon is an ardent Armagh Gael, and is a member of St Mary’s Granemore GFC
On Armagh City and District Council, Sharon is Vice Chair of Internal Scrutiny and a member of Public Services Scrutiny and Planning committees.
Sharon also is a member of the following committees/organisations:
- Southern Health and Social Services Council
- Joint Committee on Newry Portadown Canal/Towpath
- Court of the University of Ulster
- Tandragee Development Initiative
During her time as Councillor Sharon Haughey has successfully campaigned for free pre school education for all children in their immediate pre school year. She took up this battle when local playgroups were not provided with enough places and parents were forced to pay. Sharon met the Minister of Education and received the backing of the late Children's Commission Nigel Williams.
Sharon has also be an advocate for rural communities and continues to vigorously oppose the implementation of Countryside Planning Policy PPS14.
Among many campaigns she has also become a campaigner for equal access to services for deaf people.
