I am an Independent District Councillor serving as a representative for all residents within the Warkworth ward. There are two councillors representing Warkworth, Acklington, Guyzance and the surrounding area.
I was first elected in 2003 and reelected in 2007 as an Independent councillor. I was also elected as a County Councillor for Northumberland in 2005 and re-elected in 2008 to take the county forward into the new Unitary structure that will come online in April 2009.
As a district councillor, I am the chair of the Licencing Committee as well as being an active member of other district council committees. This committee controls all licencable activities, including pubs, betting shops, late-night food outlets, entertainment, taxis and a few other activites. So if a pub wished to extend it's opening hours, they would have to apply to our committee for approval.
I also have commitments to other bodies through the district council including The Amble Drop-In Centre of which I am the treasurer. I am vice-chair of Warkworth Parish Council and a member of Alnwick Development Trust.
I am particularly pleased with the development of this drop-in centre, and the facilities that it offers to the young people of Amble. Thanks to the work of myself and other members of the committee, I can see a long term future for this very worthy project.
Outside of my council work, I am a retired businessman and I have two grandchildren, and when I get a moment, I enjoy a bit of fly-fishing.
