Hastings Borough Council, Baird Ward
Councillor Richard Vallery-Peters

Regeneration

From the 4th October there will be four Police Community Support Officers on the Ore Valley area. These officers will make a valuable contribution to fight crime and help us reclaim our streets from the undesirables that blight our lives.

Baird Ward has a new beat officer, PC Les Golding has already made a significant contribution in the fight against crime. Housing and Anti-Social Behaviour remain high on the agenda for the residents of the area. The 1066 Housing Association have made great strides in Broomgrove and continue to encourage local residents to contribute towards the fight against anti-social behaviour.

Further on this page are a selection of photos taken this morning (Sun 11th Feb 2007) of the derelict Parker Road site, where the new college is to be built.

Broomgrove Redevelopment

Many of you will have noticed that fencing has been erected around Cotswold Close. This is to protect members of the public and for site safety while the old maisonettes are demolished. The work to level the site should be completed by October, a developer can then be sought to be build high quality, energy efficient homes for local people. This work has come about due to the tireless lobbying of your local Councillors, Richard Vallery and Terry Fawthrop, who like you, were fed up with all talk and no action. Together they demanded that action be taken. This is now happening. Please Remember, building sites are not playgrounds, remind your children, that building sites are dangerous areas!!!

Pennine Rise Bungalows.

Many of you are aware that the bungalows in Pennine Rise are empty and boarded up, while some are being used temporarily by Surestart. It is hoped that these dwellings will be refurbished and brought back into use before too long. I have received enquiries regarding the bungalows from local residents asking what the Council is going to do with them? Well, the Council do not own the bungalows. They are owned by 1066 Housing Association. To this end, the owners of these bungalows have commissioned a feasibility study into the costs involved and when any refurbishment will take place.

Malvern Way Shops

The owners of the shopping parade in Malvern Way were served with an enforcement order by Hastings Borough Council earlier this year. Initially, work to clean up the building was carried out, but this now appears to have come to a halt, leaving much of the work listed in the enforcement order undone. Officers are now in the process of taking further action in order that the work is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the enforcement order.

Hastings College of Arts & Technology

As part of the Regeneration programme in Hastings, a new college site is being proposed. This will mean that the Archery Road site will close and a new college site at Parker Road will be built, offering some of the highest standards of education in the South East. A public consultation took place at Parker Road took place last month, over a two day period. My colleague, Cllr Terry Fawthrop attended the Friday session to meet and listen to the views of residents, while I covered the Saturday session. many of the residents in Parker Road expressed positive views on the proposed building and the improvements to the area a new college would bring. The Learning & Skills Council are providing the funding for this unique opportunity to make Hastings a place to where students want to come and learn in a brand new environment. Very soon, residents of Parker Road will not see this eyesore when they look out their windows.

HCAT3

They won't see the derelict Exchange Travel building on the corner of Firtree Road and Parker Road either. Instead they will have a brand new building, purpose built for the new Hastings College.

HCAT5

The graffitti covered buildings to the rear of the current run down buildings will also go and be replaced by a multi use games area.

Below is an artists impression of the new college building.
