On Wednesday 24 August, it gave me great pleasure to present the Falkland Veterans Foundation (FVF) with the Freedom of the Borough.
Despite the atrocious weather, the public joined us for the ceremony, held in the Falkland Gardens, to witness the moment the organisation proudly received the town’s highest honour. More than 150 Falkland Veterans took part and marched through the High Street. The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas led the veterans and the 17th Port Maritime Regiment, provided the guard. Rear Admiral Larkin, himself a Falkland veteran and former Captain of HMS Fearless, as well as Lady Fieldhouse, joined me in taking the salute - a proud and emotional moment for us all.
