It gave me great pleasure to present the Royal Marines with the Freedom of the Borough.
On Wednesday 9 November, under blue skies and with the sun shining brightly, it gave me great pleasure to present the Royal Marines with the Freedom of the Borough of Gosport. Many people didn’t realise just how long a history the Royal Marines had with Gosport. This was reinforced when, before the main event, Lieutenant General Sir Robert Fulton KBE and I visited the War Memorial Hospital, a War Memorial to the Royal Marines killed during the First World War. A short ceremony was held, a wreath laid and a lone bugler played the last post. The whole day was fantastic and the good people came out in their hundreds to support the Marines and enjoy the rousing sounds of the Royal Marines Band.
